At a time when North Korea is resurrecting nuclear nightmares, it might seem pointless to talk about the benefits of nuclear technology. But at one of my favourite fruit vendors, I recently found an unexpected, and delicious example. From the outside it looked like an unusually large orange. But slicing revealed a dark pink interior so brilliantly set off by the thin white pith, that it almost seemed to be glowing. It was easy to see how Ruby Grapefruit had received the first part of its name. The second part is explained by the tendency of the fruit to grow in clusters, like grapes. This is not something we are likely to see in India. South and Southeast Asia are the origins of most major citrus varieties, but grapefruit is the exception. It was first noticed, and named, in the Caribbean, and developed as a major crop in the USA, from where the fruit I buy comes. The citrus family is known for the wanton way in which it crosses to produce new varieties. Grapefruit had been identified as the result of crossing pomelos and oranges. Pomelos are thick skinned, firm fleshed and with a dry, slightly astringent taste. Oranges are thin skinned, juicy and sweet.
