Business Description

Reinventing the Web with one program is a tall claim by any yardstick. But that is exactly what makers of web browser Opera are hinting at with their freshly-coded software released for public preview on June 16. Usually, when it comes to web browsers, I don’t get too excited. Once saddled with the hideous and unsafe Internet Explorer, we were freed from our virtual miseries long ago by Firefox and its ilk. Nowadays all top web browsers are similar. They, including Internet Explorer in its eighth iteration, have tabbed browsing, ability to manage sessions, plug-ins to store passwords or block advertisements, and similar other bells and whistles. Power users still prefer Firefox for its third-party add-ons and most still use Internet Explorer because it’s bundled with OS, but they no longer make any difference in the way we experience the Web. Be that as it may, Opera Unite is making too much noise to be ignored with mere indifference. It claims to bring cloud computing — a name given to the computing standard where lines between a hard drive and WWW are supposed to dissolve — to the masses, and provide a seamless file-sharing between computers as well as enable social networking services like Fridge where you and your friends can “stick” notes. Opera Unite is a 7.6MB download, quite lightweight I must say, and installation on Vista is glitch free. To use the Unite feature within the browser you need an Opera ID. Once you have signed up with Opera, sharing videos, photos and music is simple. Just tell your browser what you want to share and the information will be updated on your Opera page. It will create relevant links that you can share with your friends or public when your computer is on and connected to internet. Opera claims the connection between the host and leecher will be direct with the host’s computer acting as a web server. Other services like Fridge and Lounge are also easy to set up but I feel they are not going to be used too often because social networking is more about community and finding new friends rather than a virtual get-together.
