Business Description

Poor Netas ! I pity them. We expect them to be literate. Thinking of applying for the most menial job in the corporate world? Be prepared for the first question that is invariably asked : what are your academic qualifications? Is this passion for academic qualifications misplaced or overrated? Certainly not. History and data suggest that people with basic academic qualifications are expected to perform better than their less fortunate peers, especially in the corporate world. However, when it comes to the corporate honchos, academic qualifications seem to be totally irrelevant. How else can one explain this yawning gap in the Companies Act 2013 (Act) which was supposed to usher in a new era in governance? Despite the rapid growth of the world economy over several decades, significant rise in literacy rates, lapse of 57 years since the Companies Act, 1956 was enacted till it got replaced by the Act of 2013, no one thought it prudent to prescribe some basic academic qualifications for the corporate leaders. The 2013 Act is completely silent on this critical aspect. A person could be totally illiterate and yet there is no bar on his/her being appointed a Director of a company. Little wonder then that we have host of watchmen, peons, drivers etc. masquerading as company directors. With due respects, can we expect them to successfully navigate through a maze of complex and ever growing rule and regulations, effectively address corporate complexities & challenges and set new standards in corporate governance?
