The applicants pulling away from the pack are not the ones with the highest scores. They are the ones who built credibility before they applied. Most IMGs read that gap as a visa problem. It is also a research problem. Programs facing tighter immigration scrutiny are not loosening their academic filters. They are tightening them. Research is one of the few applicant variables that survives every wave of policy noise.

So does research help you match? The honest answer is conditional. Research moves the needle when it is aligned, credible, and visible inside the first 30 seconds of an ERAS review. It does almost nothing when it is volume for the sake of volume. The data proves both halves of that statement, and most IMGs only believe the first half.
