Initially, bomber jackets were referred to as 'flying jackets'. They were developed in 1917 by the US Army Aviation Clothing Board to keep WWI pilots warm in the uninsulated open-air cockpits of early fighter planes.
Flight jacket design has evolved throughout time as a result of aviation innovations. As cockpits became narrower and heavier as technology advanced, new designs emerged, like the leather US Army Type A-1 in 1927.
It had knitted cuffs and waistbands, which kept chilly air out and gave it an especially flattering fit. The A-1, being the first bomber jacket with knitted sleeves, cuffs, and a waistline (although the 1927 A-1 had a button-up fastening), lay the framework for the current bomber jacket.
