Business Description
Udyog Aadhaar was designed as a simplified registration solution to encourage micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in India to obtain formal recognition with minimal regulatory friction. Introduced by the Government of India through the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, the system adopted a self-certification model that allowed entrepreneurs to submit business details through a concise online interface. The Aadhaar-linked approach reduced documentation burdens and enabled quick generation of a unique Udyog Aadhaar Number (UAN), making the process accessible even to first-time business owners.
The initiative significantly contributed to expanding the MSME base within the formal economy by lowering entry barriers and improving procedural efficiency. Registered enterprises gained greater credibility and improved access to institutional finance, policy incentives, and government development programs. Although later replaced by Udyam Registration for enhanced verification and system integration, Udyog Aadhaar remains a key step in India’s efforts to digitize business compliance and promote ease of doing business for small enterprises.
